Tapestries - Luleen Anderson
“Make the tabernacle with ten curtains of finely twisted linen and blue, purple and scarlet yarn, with cherubim woven into them by a skilled worker.” Exodus 26:1 (NIV)
I think of a tapestry as a metaphor for our lives and the way we weave them. Each of our lives is a tapestry on which we work, creating an ever-expanding object of beauty. God is our co-creator in this process.
Carol King sings of tapestry as a metaphor:
Of rich and royal hue
An everlasting vision
Of the ever-changing view
A wondrous woven magic
In bits of blue and gold
A tapestry to feel and see
Impossible to hold
If we view our lives as tapestries, it matters what threads we choose for our weaving. We can choose dark and grim colors of anger, sadness, disappointment, and regret, or we can choose vibrant colors of love, joy, peace, and harmony. Viewing the fabric of our lives as tapestries means we do not dwell on the past, wishing we could change things by removing some of the threads that have been woven into our tapestry. We cannot pick and choose to pull out the threads of past weavings without diminishing the entire tapestry or possibly destroying it. We do not dwell on what has passed. Instead, we focus on what we are weaving now, asking God for guidance.
Thought for the day: My life is a beautiful, never-ending tapestry.
Prayer: I pray for guidance as I select the materials for my weaving.
